I am amazed about God’s goodness. There are days when I think about my life and I wonder why God has been so good to me. I mean, after all, I have not been the poster child of faithfulness to God. In fact, if we were keeping score, it would be a shutout. God, by far, is far more faithful to me than I have ever been to him. So why has God been so good to me since I am so bad?
The best answer I can find is that God is love. Love is good. As so, God is good.
God is love.
1 John 4:8 ● NRSV
I think of the scripture that describes the power of love.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ● NRSV
In my experience, that about sums up God’s goodness. God has been patient with me. God has been kind to me. God hasn’t forced me to act in a certain way. Sure, he doesn’t rejoice in my wrongdoing, but he hasn’t abandoned me either. He has certainly put up with more than I deserve. God believes in me more than I do myself. He holds out hope for me and has endured a lot. Yet, God’s love never ends.
The Psalmist was on to something as he sang, God’s love endures forever (Psalm 136). No wonder the Psalmist said it twenty-six times in twenty-six verses. His steadfast love endures forever.
God is so good to me even when I am so bad because God is love.
