On day 13 of the book, “Jesus: 21 Days That Can Change the Way You Pray”, I encourage you to ask God to give you a place to glorify God.

Well, in the days of social distancing and remaining at home, how are you supposed to glorify God? How can God give you a place?

Since the beginning of Christianity, disciples of Jesus have always had to figure out how to make other disciples in the context of the world they lived. Today we are no different.

Our World is Changing

Even after the COVID-19 pandemic passes, we will be living in a different world than we were six months ago. The way we do things will be different also.

I suspect social media and other web-based technologies will be the norm. Organizations and businesses will have discovered how to utilize internet conferencing. Churches (even those who never used media previously) will have mastered live-stream services or at least become fluent. Families will have developed staying connected through Facetime and Portal.

While Facebook, Snap-chat, and other systems were well utilized, these platforms will have become the norm just like picking up the Bell Telephone was a half-century ago. No one gave it a second thought.

3 Ways

So, let’s discuss 3 ways you can glorify God in our current environment.

  1. Call an elderly person on the phone.
  2. Faith-Message a friend.
  3. Post a Witness.
1. Call an Elderly Person

Do not let those older than you who have technological challenges get left out.  Many of our seniors do not have the technology or the know-how to use Facebook, Messenger, etc. It has only been recently that my Father has learned how to text on his cellphone. While these apps may be second nature to you, for “olders” it is not so simple. Seniors are just as social as you are, and they are also feeling the effects of isolation. So, pick up your phone and call someone older than you.

2. Faith-Message a Friend

For many people this second method isn’t anything new. In fact, for many messaging is their primary means of communication even when not in the midst of a pandemic. So, what’ new about this?

Instead of just messaging small talk, send a message about a passage of scripture you read. Or maybe message them that you are praying for them right now. Tell them that you are praying that their relationship with God and his Son will go to another level today. The point is that you take what you do already and tweak it to bring glory to God in some way.

3. Post a Witness

Yes, I know. My Facebook is filled with enough memes too. Some of them already speak of God, while others, well…, not so much.

But imagine if each day you posted a meme or message block that glorified God.  Maybe share a story of your faith. Instead of just sharing a video/live-stream of how to plant flowers or how to survive your children now that they are home from school, also share a video about how God has changed your life in the last 24 hours or through this pandemic.

The church has been deployed.

As a friend of mine posted a meme referencing the closure of church buildings: “The church isn’t empty, it has just been deployed.” We are actually in a time where the church (disciples of Christ) have the opportunity to demonstrate our faith to the world. We have always had this opportunity, but today our situation seems to be propelling us to another level.

What other ways are you using to glorify God in this crisis?
